Does the realization of nondual awareness flatten personal taste and aesthetic preference?
When awareness recognizes its undivided nature, personal particularity does not dissolve into a bland neutrality; rather, the weight of defending a localized identity drops away. Consciousness is not a static, detached container indifferent to its contents. The very nature of foundational reality is to manifest and know itself through infinite variety. A person can fully inhabit a distinct sensibility—preferring certain forms of art, cultivating specific crafts, and appreciating refined experiences—while recognizing that no single preference makes awareness more complete than it already is. Engaging with particularity is simply how undivided reality exercises its own boundless freedom. Distinctiveness shifts from a need to assert one’s individuality into the natural movement of consciousness experiencing itself through a specific vantage point.
The lucid habitation of a localized role transforms how connoisseurship and critical discernment function in daily life. An actor on a stage can throw themselves completely into the specific mannerisms, passions, and tastes of a character without resenting the contrasting roles around them. In the play of reality, however, the actor is not wearing a foreign costume; the actor’s own being has become the stage, the script, the character, and the audience. Because the localized personality is a genuine, transient form of the whole, an individual can exercise sharp aesthetic judgment without falling into psychological division. Refining a craft or evaluating a work requires recognizing when an arrangement is clumsy, derivative, or out of proportion. Yet this rejection of a flawed form remains purely functional rather than existential. A musician can correct a discordant note, and a reader can set aside an uninspired book, without condemning the underlying reality or elevating the ego through the act of critique.
At the same time, recognizing the undivided nature of reality clarifies how psychological contraction shapes human taste. A mind operating under the illusion of isolation is frequently drawn to art and imagery rooted in separation, conflict, and existential friction. Because the separate self relies on tension to maintain its sense of boundary, a contracted sensibility often seeks out chaotic, aggrieved, or hyper-individualistic forms that mirror and validate its felt sense of separation. When awareness is no longer bound to defending that localized struggle, the compulsive appetite for imagery that reinforces alienation naturally subsides. An awakened sensibility can still appreciate the raw honesty of a tragic narrative or the dramatic tension of a dissonant composition, yet the viewer no longer uses those forms to feed a personal grievance. Conversely, when an artwork achieves a high degree of coherence, economy, and balance, the habitual chatter of the conceptual mind is more easily quieted, allowing perception to rest in stillness. Whether engaging with the serene, the turbulent, or the completely ordinary, the underlying reality remains identical across every experience. Personal taste and artistic discernment simply function as avenues for savoring a distinct flavor of existence, free from the need to validate a separate self through its likes and dislikes. ●
