Do deeply ingrained belief systems play a role in supernatural experiences?

After a trip to New Orleans, a minister’s daughter hung a newly acquired plastic mask on her bedroom wall. Shortly thereafter, an unexplained thump resonated from the attic, yet a thorough search left the disturbance unaccounted for. The minister concluded the mask harbored an unclean spirit. He rebuked the spirit and threw the mask into his potbelly stove, where the melting plastic hissed like the shriek of a fleeing entity.

According to the consciousness-only model of reality, the mask did not smuggle a separate entity or subtle energetic resonance into the home. Instead, localized awareness, operating through a deeply ingrained belief system, perceived the mask as an unclean object. The mask acted as an anchor for psychological conflict to manifest as an experientially real phenomenon.  

When the mask entered the home, perception of the object was filtered through a dualistic lens. Conditioned mental activity animated the concept of an evil spirit, generating a tangible and threatening psychological experience. Operating through this limited conceptual framework, the localized awareness divided reality into the mundane and the otherworldly, viewing the unexplained thump in the attic as a spiritual intrusion, and experiencing a routine physical reaction—such as the hissing sound of expanding gas in a polymer matrix—as a demonic shriek. However, the initial anomalous disturbance and the predictable reaction of the melting plastic do not belong to separate domains. Within a consciousness-only model, physics does not exist as an independent, material force. Instead, physical laws operate as the stable, predictable patterns of awareness. Because the relative world functions as a dynamic expression of this awareness, both the physics of the expanding gas and the spontaneous manifestation of the anomalous sound act as different focal points of the same unified reality.

When physical phenomena manifest in direct alignment with beliefs, the natural order remains unviolated, as both the objective event and the subjective interpretation arise concurrently as a single movement of consciousness.  The thought does not happen first and then travel outward to alter matter. The inner psychological state and the outer physical event are not separate forces acting upon one another. Both occur simultaneously within awareness.

In a nondual framework, no separate author of action exists. No localized character possesses independent intention. The assumed identity of the minister is a limited appearance within a limitless knowing. This  temporary identity is a useful fiction, an accumulation of mental habits, beliefs, and apparent contradictions appearing within the fundamental reality. Experience occurs as consciousness contracts into a first-person perspective consisting of patterns of thought and memory. Such specific conditioning creates the illusion of a separate ego feeling entirely distinct from the surrounding environment. These limiting perspectives arise naturally as a spontaneous expression of a singular knowing. When observed through a dualistic lens, alignments may appear as supernatural or miraculous. With regard to the anomalous disturbance in the home, awareness manifested in perfect accordance with the conditioning of the localized mind.

The desire to exercise spiritual authority and the belief in cosmic warfare act as limiting conceptual patterns that supply the constructed identity with a subjective sense of divine purpose. While fundamentally unconditioned and entirely complete, awareness freely assumes the localized perspective and engages in the active pursuit of goals and meaning. 

The synchronous expression of internal conditioning and external reality functioned as a single, spontaneous movement. Although the minister experienced the triumphant defeat of an external evil, the scenario of cosmic warfare arose as the natural consequence of consciousness freely assuming a localized, evangelical form. Rather than an interaction between an independent ego and an energetically charged object, the occurrence was driven entirely by consciousness experiencing itself through a specific lens. ●
